After some posts in the Rubicon thread I think it would be nice to discuss IMHO the greatest spy fiction author.

His works have been made in to excellent film: The Constant Gardener, The Tailor of Panama, The BBC series of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Smiley's People and of course The Spy Who Came In From The Cold, a film whose moral ambiguity stands in stark contrast against similar works from that era.

My favorite book is probably Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, but I also love Our Game, which may be overlooked in his canon.

John, dude, the author is John. And, yeah, George Smiley is IMO one of the great characters of fiction.

Haha, Im an idiot - I mixed up George Smiley with his name.

Love his books. Haven't seen any of the adaptations though.

The BBC version of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy was excellent, as was Smiley's People (they skipped the Honourable Schoolboy for some reason, probably because it's a departure from George Smiley, the main protagonist).

I couldn't get through the film version of The Perfect Spy, just wasn't for me. His newer novels are just as well written as the older ones, but to me they lack the feel/ambience/whatever you want to call it of his older work, which is a big part of its appeal.

Le Carre is great. If one enjoys spy fiction, Alan Furst and Eric Ambler are also great reads.
