Thinning hair or going bald? - Page 3

Who am I supposed to make an appointment with if I want to get on Proscar, anyways? My personal physician? A dermatologist? Can I just go to any old dermatologist or do I have to find one specializing in hair loss?

I've thinned on top. Been forgetful about getting on to propecia, though i've intended to do it for a couple years. I just never remember to go see a doctor about it during the week. That said, I don't really view it as a permanent solution. It will eventually wear off (maybe not completely) and you'll start thinning again. If you ever stop taking it, you'll end up where you were supposed to be naturally in a hurry.

You probably need to decide if you will ever be ok with losing your hair and if taking a pill every day is something you don't mind doing. There are other options as well... Some people are lucky and look good with shaved heads. I would look like a cancer patient. I just don't have the head shape and bone structure for it, so I intend on keeping my hair one way or the other.

Regardless, you've got lots of time to deal with yours, especially if you get on propecia asap.

Research suggests that the gene for the androgen receptor, which is significant in determining probability for hair loss, is located on the X chromosome and so is always inherited from the mother's side.[22] There is a 50% chance that a person shares the same X chromosome as his maternal grandfather. Because women have two X chromosomes, they will have two copies of the androgen receptor gene while men only have one. However, research has also shown that a person with a balding father also has a significantly greater chance of experiencing hair loss.

Basically, there's research to suggest there is some truth to it, although it probably is not the whole truth.
