I currently shave once every 3-4 days, at which point my shadow is well past 5 o'clock. I almost always get mild rashing on my neck area as a result. The only solution I've found to date is shaving very lightly around the neck area (one pass), and always with the grain (for me, upward stroke). I'm gonna have to start shaving every day soon, and my brother - who had the same problem growing up - swears that an electric shaver is the answer. Is he right? If so, would you gents care to recommend a nice electric - say $125-$200 max? YAWP!

I would definitely say no. Your answer probably lies in learning to DE Shave with a safety razor, which I have just done for the same reason. But there could also be a lot of other factors now than just the shave that contribute, such as prep, lather, razor and post shave that could be having an effect.
Head over to www.badgerandblade.com if you want some more info, but be warned, it's a slippery slope once you get in to it.

It may cut down on irritation but then again it may not, I tend to think that it varies from person to person. Do your facial hairs tend to curl or stick in different directions when they grow for a few days? I used to have that problem and solved it by wetshaving daily. I hate being all "zomg if you don't wetshave with a DE you suck" but I'd really suggest giving it a try. 20 minutes a day is a small price to pay for zero irritation and a closer shave.

I went the DE route for 9 months but it didn't work out for me. My hair grows at a very very shallow angle on my neck and the extra close shave of a DE setup resulted in constant ingrown hairs. My journey brought me from a cheapo remmington to mach3 to DE (fatboy + derby + Proraso and Tabac) then back to electric, a wet/dry Panasonic. So far I personally have been most satisfied with the Panasonic, which I use in the shower but still with the Proraso.
If you want to try DE or even a straight blade then Badger&Blade is a good place, as is The Shave Den. Don't go around asking about electrics there, though.

Yes, an electric razor will likely help. I have very thick, coarse stubble that does not respond at all well to being shaved with Mach 3s and their ilk. Switching to a basic electric - and, now, a proper Braun Series 7 - totally removed all the blotching and rashes.
No, an electric doesn't have the cachet of a proper DE setup. But neither does it require me to wave a sharp instrument over my arteries before I've had my coffee. Go for the electric.

I've found the best for my skin is to use an electric shaver for 4-5 days and then use a manual shaver for one day and then go back to the electric. Once every two weeks or so I use a straight razor. It gives the closest shave but it takes me a half hour or so and is kind of taxing on my skin.
I've found Braun to be a very good electric and as for the manual ones, I stock up whenever I get a coupon or there is a discount at one of my local stores. I'm shameless in the pursuit of a deal.
For straight razor advice I'd ditto Badger&Blade and also recommend Thatstraightrazorplace. Each site has guys who can tell you every thing you want/need to know about using a straight razor. There are also films on YouTube that will teach you how to use and sharpen a straight edge.
Good luck

A lot of guys hate electric razors, but honestly, they're not that bad. It will depend on your face and hair type, but an electric razor can be very gentle on the skin. I used to suffer under the Mach 3, then I got into DE safety razor shaving. That was great, until I got a staph infection from some nasty razor burn. During the staph days, I picked up an electric because I couldn't use the DE for fear of further spreading the infection. The infection cleared up, but I haven't switched back. The electric's pretty convenient and comfortable, no nicks or razor burn and it gets rather close. I'll likely go back someday, but I'm content where I am for the moment.

I had a similar problem to you, which is partly the reason I only shaved every 2-3 days before I got out of college. Shaving with a razor gave me a really close shave and then I would always have a very irritated neck and usually an ingrown or two the next day. I started using an electric which doesn't give me as close of a shave, and that is the reason my skin does not get irritated now. I use a razor for special occasions, and then I usually pay the price for it the next day. I definitely think an electric will help you out.

buy a nice gillette fusion razor and go from there! Make sure you shave in the direction of hair growth to minimize any irritation and ingrown hairs.
I agree.
I have the same problem with my neck as the OP. I shave in the shower, one swipe down on the neck, wash my face after shaving, and apply a little hydrocortisone cream to my neck.

I was always causing bumps / rash no matter what I tried, including shaving soaps and brushes, etc. The only thing that's worked for me so far is to shave with the grain with a Fusion right out of the shower with NO cream. For some reason not using shaving cream helps tremendously, maybe because the shave is not as close. If there are some spots that need another pass, instead of going against the grain with the blade I use an electric, but only after the first pass with the blade. It feels a lot worse than shaving with cream but the lack of redness and rash after says otherwise. Oh, and don't skip a day or you'll be more likely to end up with ingrown hairs.
