What to pack for NYC in early Nov.?

Heading to NYC with the gf for a few days. Probably doing nicer places uptown for breakfasts and walks and spending evenings and dinners downtown at midrange restaurants. What should I bring/avoid? And for the gf- what do girls usually wear out?

it'll be 50-60 degrees, you figure it out

A lot of nicer places don't do breakfast. If you are on a budget, I would do the nicer places for lunch - more and more places are now open at lunch to capture that tourist crowd. As for clothes, NYC is very diverse. If you are worried about looking like a tourist, just avoid dad jeans, running shoes, and technical outerwear.

+1 also avoid HUEG technical backpacks, dead giveaway and the easiest for the pickpockets.

Even in early November, nights can dip to the low 40's/ high 30's if its a bad year, days are 50/60.
you can also be unlucky and have it rain for the entire stay, or be lucky and have it be sunny the whole time. I love the fall though, I love any excuse to wear tweed.

November is suede sportcoat and leather jacket weather.

I think Fall weather is the best weather for style. Period. Enjoy wearing whatever the fuck you want. If you wanna be a tough guy, you can rough it out in a tee shirt, or you can layer if you want, and Fall has the best color palette, I just love Fall

Depending on where you're going in New York, I'd grab a few sportcoats and buttondowns and nice leather shoes. The city is one of the few places where people will appreciate that you aren't walking around in shapeless sneakers and band t-shirts; in fact, NYC has the lowest graphic-t-shirt-per-capita of any place I've ever been. Only time I've ever walked out on the street in a buttondown and felt underdressed.

If it looks like it's going to be rainy, you might want to bring a trench (PROTIP: check my sig if you are a tiny little man like me).

Also, you could just wear everything in the new APC F/W collection and look fantastic at all times.

Nice trench or parka and some light sweaters, oxfords. You need pieces that you can layer or peel down depending on the weather. A good pair of khaki's are pretty versatile. You also need a good pair of sneakers for walking and a nice pair of boots or shoes.

Me too, so many options, can't wait to go shopping OP, can't go wrong w/a trench + leather jacket... some slim jeans + appropriate shoes would tie it all together. As long as your clothes fit well and are relatively quality pieces you won't be outed as an outsider.

Breakfast i wouldn't worry about as much. Grab a coffee and bagel/pastry/yogurt somewhere and hit the town. If you want, you can def go somewhere cool for lunch then cheaper for dinner though. Probably a ton of good websites about eating good and reasonable in new york though. Can always use yelp to try and find quick comparisons/location maps/menus and other websites for lists and stuff. Weather who knows. Do you need to plan now? Personally before i go on trips like that i wait till the weather.com 10day forecast comes out and check it real quick or at least make sure they're not expecting some kind of weird snow. There was that snow storm in late october/early nov last year that caught people off guard.

Wow thanks guys! I'll take the advice about going cheap for breakfast, going big at lunch and going cheap-ish for dinner. Should be a good balance. Weatherwise Im hoping for a tweed-y 50 degrees and clear!

Dude, where whatever the fuck you want.

In terms of guys you can wear whatever you want as long as you don't have a huge backpack then no one will notice your tourists. For girls she could wear anywhere from simple sundresses to basic shorts and whatever top. I'd stay away from a mini skirt though, always felt it gave off such a "try hard" vibe in the city. Oh and for food if your lookin for cheap eats hit China town for cheap food and large portions and right next to it is little italy if you get bored. And my tip for a nice date is hit up Serendipity, great desserts and awesome atmosphere.
