Bret Easton Ellis, Love or Hate?

Having read both American Physco and Glamorama I rather like his novels and seeing as "Imperial Bedrooms" has only recently been released I was wondering what members opinions were on his work.

Loved, loved, loved American Psycho.

For the most part Glamorama bored me and turned me off to his other work.

From his twitter (friend subscribes, I don't) and his facebook page, he comes off as a gigantically conceited and obnoxious douchebag.

I know what you mean about Glamorama, it wasn't terrible but no where near as good as American Physco. Having read and watched some interviews he does seem rather pretentious. I will however read another.

Although I haven't read all his books, I do find him entertaining. American Psycho was great and Less than Zero was pretty good. In a weird way, I was slightly more disturbed by Less than Zero.

I think he's a decent author, but sometimes I wonder about all the praise. He writes about conceited urban douche-bags so well, it's hard to picture him right along with his characters.

People are afraid to merge on freeways in Los Angeles.

One of my favorite writers.

I laughed my ass off while reading Glamorama, although it slowed down in the second half.

Read most of his other works as well.

I liked LTZ, though he is still way over-rated.

What next? Lunar Park? Less Than Zero?

I enjoyed Lunar Park, but it wasn't as out there as the other two you read. Perhaps The rules of attraction. Actually LTZ would be a more logical choice.

I couldn't even finish Glamorama. AP and Less than Zero were incredible. Haven't read Rules of Attraction yet.

I agree, then you can follow it up with Imperial Bedrooms.

I agree re: Less Than Zero. Perhaps because the Bateman character in American Psycho was so far out of bounds, he was a caricature. The kids in Less Than Zero bore a great resemblance to people you might know or know of. In that same general time frame, the Kennedy kids and the Preppy Killer were up to all sorts of mayhem. Haven't much cared for Ellis since then. I may have to give him another try.

Lunar Park was forgettable. Rules of Attraction was pretty good, but it was so dated that I actually enjoyed the movie version better (which is now dated in its own way). I've got Less Than Zero on my desk, I'll read it in the next couple of weeks.

Agreed. I'm sure most SFers would agree. Hilarious book. I saw the movie of Rules of Attraction and enjoyed it, so I'm sure I'd like the book too. Not familiar with his other books.

I haven't read any of his stuff in years. I have always liked the way he crosses some of his characters (and one of McInerney's) from book to book.
