Anyone ever had straight hair become curly?

Okay, here's the story:

I've always had straight hair. For the past 9 years (since I was 18), I've cut my hair short, basically as short as they could get it using scissors or sometimes using a #3 with the clippers.

For the last 6 months or so I've been growing my hair out, so it's a few inches long now, and, lo and behold, it's CURLY/WAVY !!!

The question is:

Will my hair remain curly/wavy forever now, or do you think once it's been cut a few times and continues to grow out it will return to being straight?

I'm thinking the curliness is simply due to the fact that it hasn't been longer than an inch for nearly a decade. I like the curly look, but if it's not going to last, I'm going to go back to the short style.

Thoughts?

It's genetics. You'll probably have wavy hair from now on.

I should have clarified that, before I started cutting it short at age 18, I had all different lengths (including down to my shoulders) at different times, and it was never wavy or curly.

My paternal grandmother has somewhat curly hair, yes, but no one else.

Yeah, I started off with blonde straight hair (almost white). As I got older, it got darker. By age 11 it was totally brown. Then the moment I hit puberty, my hair went totally curly, which it is to this day. So I would say that you are stuck with it.

On the plus side, while I hated having curly hair, chicks do dig it.

Well, as hair gets longer then it's going t weigh itself down, and that would straighten it naturally. Though I'm not sure how effective that is.

Hormonal changes can do it. Mine was curly as a baby and in puberty, straight at all other times in my life.

My wife's was mostly straight until had 2 kids.

Yeah, mine was straight. Hit puberty at 13 and it went curly & wavy...has stayed that way. Yours will probably stay that way too.

yup, you're getting old. Your eyebrows and nose hair should start coming in too. Welcome to it.

Mine was straight until after college, then became cury/wavy.

Mine used to be straight too until I grew it out. Now whatever length it is, its curly/wavey

A guy I know had curly/wavy hair, cut it down and held it close to nothing for some years. When he let it grow out again it as straigt and has been so for a couple of years now.
