Having a minor communicable disease: Do you go in to work?

When you have a minor infectious disease, most likely a bit of a cold, do you go in to work? I typically do the day I feel it coming on, then I will take a morning off if possible and go in in the afternoon, hide in my office and try to get at least a few things done. Typically by the next day I feel reasonably able to go in again for full days. I do worry about spreading the germs though. Do you skip a full day or more if you're down, or just tough it out and risk infecting everyone?

If you can afford it, and its serious enough, no.

I always tough it out unless I'm noticeably ill and would end up being the scapegoat if my sickness spread around.

A simple cold? I come in. The flu? I come in if I can manage. I can't get out of bed or get away from the toilet bowl? I stay home.

If I've actually got shit to do at work .. I'll come in almost regardless of how sick I am.

Last summer I almost worked my entire way through having mono. Was sick for about a month but only missed the 2 days I spent in the hospital, and a couple afternoons. Mind you, I had no idea what I had, and my only symptoms was I got a little feverish in the afternoons (until the night before I went to the hospital when I got "I think I'm going to die" sick). This was right in the middle of the "swine-flu" thing, so I was of the mindset that if I called in sick with a fever they'd think I had swine-flu and not let me come back into work until I was cleared by a doctor and I can't stand doctors/hospitals.

I fucking hate people who go out in public when they're sick.

Fix your own crappy immune system and stop blaming others for your inherent weakness.

Tell that to the thousands of old people who die from the flu every year.

They are being weeded out.

+1 I don't know if I hate them, but I tend to agree with the sentiment.

If you're sick, stay home unless you absolutely cannot help it, especially if you get paid sick leave.

I have encountered very few people who are so important that their workplaces cannot survive without them for a day or two. Nor is what they are doing so important that they cannot afford to be behind a day or two on the rare occasion that they are sick.

Also, taking that day to rest and take care of yourself may actually help you get well in a shorter amount of time, which may mean fewer days of fuzzy-headed work where you show up but are not effective.

Not to mention the fact that if they "tough it out" it may cause ten other people to miss work.

Living in NYC and commuting by subway makes me want to kill people who are visibly sick and still get on the train. A certain race of people are especially nasty hacking and coughing without even covering their mouths.

Perhaps they shouldn't have used up their sick days when they really weren't sick.

Besides, who can't work from home?
