You guys have a good site to see what acts will be coming to your area? Indie and big bands alike.

My boy writes a blog of bands that he checks out and that are in the NY area. Good stuff...Here is a post from July(he puts it out every week):

Hey Everybody -
If you need me to add anyone to the email list, just pass on the names. Thanks for spreading the word... Also, do your best to get on Spotify. The service is pure quality!

Show(s) I caught last week:

Wu Lyf @ Mercury Lounge (7/22/11) - World Unite / Lucifier Youth Foundation, a band from Manchester, England have been riding some good blog / web buzz for most of 2011. They built up a mysterious reputation about themselves, delivered music on YouTube page and accompanied it all with a strange website. They recently self released their debut album which I have come to like. All in all, I have become intrigued by the way these guys are going about their business and decided to finally catch them. Their previous stop to nYc a couple months back had them playing to a sold out Glasslands and this time around they played to a sold out Mercury Lounge - they sold out the Knitting Factory too the next night.

Having now seen them, I will say these guys are doing something right. Their music is sung through a lead singer with a very raspy voice and they fill the space with an instrumental rock sound - think Explosions In The Sky to a minor degree. Single guitar notes are held for a while and organs - which give the music a religious feel - stretch things out even longer all while we are given some serious drum thumping. Things get layered and you end up with lots of peaks and valleys. The four piece band, which 3/4 opted to play sans shirts, had the crowd nice and tightly packed and intrigued all throughout their set. Talking was minimal amongst the audience during this one. It was a refreshing show and one band that I can say delivered on the buzz. Look out for these guys to pop later this year. They are still unsigned and doing things their way...kudos to that!

Lucero @ Mercury Lounge (7/23/11) - Tennessee's southern rockers played "a surprise" show at the Mercury Lounge Saturday night. After playing the Warp Tour earlier in the day, the guys brought their southern rock to a packed house Saturday night. The crowd was eager to let loose with these dudes as they called out those fans that got a "double shot" of Lucero on this day. Boozing was heavy for this one as lead singer Ben Nichol's took swigs of whiskey and band mates even shot gunned beers on stage. Regardless of chaotic scene they bring, the music is quality and stays front and center. Ben Nichol's crafts storytelling lyrics and delivers them with girt and conviction. The heavy guitar blend of rock just adds fuel to the fire. All in all, it was fun night of music. Now all we need to do is a get a triple bill of The Drive By Truckers, The Hold Steady and Lucero and will be all set... If you are interested in giving these guys a shot, listen to their album "Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers" - great title if you ask me.

I saw Drive-By Truckers last night for the grand (re)opening of the Georgia Theatre.

The Georgia Theatre is an Athens institution - all of the bands that came out of Athens played there - and it was gutted by a fire in the summer of 2009. They completely rebuilt it, and this was the big grand opening weekend. The Truckers brought it back with a bang. They absolutely killed it last night. I've seen them four times now, and they always put on a good show, but I don't think I've ever seen them as intense as they were last night. I'm glad I got to be there.

How were they? I saw them when they toured for Attak, and they were awesome. I keep telling myself I need to see them again, but I've yet to do so.

Journey, Foreigner, and Night Ranger are doing a show. Now, I'm torn over this - on one hand, I'd love to see Sister Christian and Jukebox Hero live. On the other, I fucking hate Journey. Hmmmm.

It's okay, everyone hates Journey.

Comically enough, I saw...damn, what was that stupid band called, with Mike Reno at the front, and they were SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO popular at the time but I thought they sucked and even their guitarist thought they got overplayed and then that was IT - NO MAS. I didn't miss them. Dammit, totally blanking on their name and I refuse to google it. dammit. Anyway I saw them a few years back (no red leather to be found anywhere on stage, thankfully!) and they still sucked, just as hard as they ever did. The Mickey Kantor Jefferson Airplane Starship Project was much better than I'd expected though (but We Built This City still sucks). Maybe by then all the weed my friends were smoking had seeped in.

Speaking of, is there any way that someone, somewhere, can work up a pension for retired rockers so they don't have to do Another Series of Tours. It hurts to see some of these geriatrics up there playing the young man's game that is Rock and Roll.
