Investment banking, no contest. Consulting wouldn't even be in my top 10.

All three open doors but not necessarily a wide variety or career change options. In terms of which one probably offers the most variety, I'd think top tier consulting is probably the one. Then IB. Then way behind, I'd put accounting - Big 4 experience certainly opens a lot of doors but in a more narrow range of careers.

Of course it depends.

Consulting - way better for going into strategy, corp/business development, even fringe things like marketing. In other words, if you want to be working on strategy for a while, this opens the most doors.

IB - Opens the doors to PE better.

Both are good for getting into Top 5 B Schools, assuming you have a decent name employer. If you are looking for pure money (think twice is all I'm going to say), IB will give you the opportunity to be pulling in 250K-300K within 4 years at a good PE job after your stint as analyst.

I have known consulting friends to get into similar positions, but really it is a much easier path via IB.

With consulting, it is also VERY easy to get into industry. So if you consult airlines, you will have a bunch of sweet connections in that industry after 3-5 years. Same if you work in financial services, or media, or whatever.

So you see, it really depends.

Also you sound a little toolish recently merkur. Tone it down with the corporate whoring. I'm not sure who is worse, you or Oman the Future Executive.

I picked consulting and agree with Metrostyles reasoning.

If by consulting you mean management consulting for top tier firms, then it is the winner. But if it is specializing consulting for boutique firms, then it is at the bottom of the pack in term of career openness.

Can we create a "career and seduction advice" subforum so the morons can congregate among themselves?

Glad you asked. I was actually working on this with J. The forum you mention is up next, as soon as we finish setting up the "Little hipster ***** with trust funds" subforum.

I bet the later will generate a lot more interest... Oh please, you know you have a wanker job you do for $$$ and you barely tolerate it. Seeing the most insignificant questions about IB/consulting/biglaw/bigaccountingwhatever probably irks you as much as it irks me. Even if you loved your job (like many here do) the career questions posted on SF are some of the most wankerish the human mind can conceive of.

I'd pee in your mouth free of charge, I hope you're happy.

BTW for the "relationship" equivalent see the thread about some troll and/or sucker falling for a stripper...
