Apartment flooded, need clothes washing advice

My basement level apartment flooded, I was there when it happened so all of my things were out of the water, but I had to leave them in there for over a day. Finally got them out and they all stink. Online research has gotten me nowhere. Was going to take some stuff to the dry cleaners but everything's closed sunday and I don't want to wait. Washing some stuff now, cold water with just regular detergent, then will hang dry some and machine dry the rest.

Again, anything that was actually in the water was tossed, I'm talking only about stuff that was hanging or on shelves. I guess I'm just going to wash things as I'd normally do, unless anyone has any advice.

Right forum. What state are you in? Wisconsin? Here about the sink hole we had here?

Do you have insurance or does the apartment complex owner have it? I have a friend in NYC whose apartment flooded due to a busted pipe and he says all his clothes were ruined. Someone paid for his wardrobe, not sure if it was his personal insurance (renter's insurance) or the buildings.

Hmm this interests me greatly. How did the find out the value of his clothing?

Well they sent a claims person out to look at his place. The guy just took a quick look at his stuff he said was ruined so you can't really say you have designer clothes to try to get more money. Then my friend put out an estimate about how expensive the clothes ruined were. I don't think he got the full amount but he got a good percentage of it. They use the logic, clothes lose value as they are worn.

And I'm pretty sure a building owner has to have insurance. So if I were the OP, I would first research this, then get other tenants in the apartments to file some claims too. You would have a higher chance of getting money out of the owner if there are more people as he would probably be more willing to pay his deductible.

Again, I'm not sure of how comprehensive building insurance is but I know homeowner's and renter's insurance can cover a lot with natural disasters being one of them. Like my good friend just got married and he had his wife's ring appraised. So if she even loses the ring anywhere, he can just pay his deductible ($2000) and the insurance company would pay for it back. His insurance would also cover if his dog attacked someone at a park.

Well I ended up just washing stuff as I normally would, then air drying some and machine drying the rest. Everything seems fine.

No rental insurance for me, and I was the only tenant that got flooded. The landlord is kind of being a dick right now, I took a vacancy in another building of theirs at discounted rent but starting to wish I didn't.

Really did look like something out of a Micheal Bay movie.
