That conversation and that conflict could have happened at the farm (throw in a random zombie for action) as the kid recuperated or better yet was kept under by Herschel. Let's say Rick wins and they decide to let him go. They bring him to and as they load hm into the car he sees Maggie. "Hello, Maggie."
That puts the same spin on the ep but brings everyone in: we can't let him go vs. we can't take care of him. Why the hell didn't the kid mention Maggie before? Use every advantage he had to stay at the farm?
