Why do you force third-world children to make T-shirts in windowless factories and then sell them for three times your cost?

Well, true enough, many designers print on t-shirts produced in sweatshops, and exploit the cheap price of production in 3d world coutnries. However, not all of us do that. Awareness is on the rise. I try to produce most the tees I design in small local businesses - that way I can control the entire production process from buying the fabric through cutting, sewing, printing... It makes the products much more... personal...

First of all, 5$ would be more ore less the price it would cost a designer to buy a blank T-shirt and print on it, unless you own a "t-shirt factory"... If the designer wants to earn a living he/she would have to sell that shirt to a shop for more or less twice that price. The shop has to earn something, and that's how you end up buying a 20$ tee. We ar talking about designer t-shirts, not big fashion labels...

is it possible to custom tailor tshirts?

Yes it is. The only thing that might make that a bit tricky is the price.

T-shirts are relatively cheap because they are worth producing (not only in sweatshops) in large quantities. Screen printing (which is the highest quality for printing on tees) is also "cost effective" in large numbers.

However, you can custom a cut that you like and get a tailor to sew it. I do that with the prototype models of my t-shirts. You could always heat press a print (it's not as good as screen printing, but it'll cost much less).
