Tips on hair coloring?

Ive been wanting to color my hair subtly from pitch black to something else like maybe a dark gold brown or something similar. nothing extreme. I know there are products at Target and you can do it yourself, but I am afraid of either hair loss or coloring it to something else undesired.
Like i want a lustrous dark brown full of depth and sheen but i m afraid it may turn out to be some matte-looking turd color.

Any advice from anyone who has done it themselves before? I hear people do it all the time and to great success so let me know thanks.

Don't do it yourself, go to a salon and pay the extra $. You're going from dark to lighter, which requires expertise. And when it looks exactly as you hoped you'll justify the dollars spent for a professional color. Buy some shampoo from Target (or wherever) that is designed for color treated hair, otherwise the color will fade in a month or sooner. The Pantene stuff is decent and inexpensive. Shorty's on Fairfax and Melrose in LA is very reasonably priced and their stylists are good. No appointment required.

you can have your gf/wife do it. it's pretty easy. just make sure you cover everything. you just have to do it one chunk at a time. i've been trying to find this awesome color that was brown or medium brown from the women's colors. i think it was revlon anyways the awesome part is that it didn't dry my hair, which usually happens when i color then i have to cut it all off again and go short. it was pretty light but matched my eyes. when i had it done professionally i asked for brown/ medium brown but it came out darker. there are brands that specialize in brown at the salon.

Usually when men color their hair, it is the most transparent thing ever. As others have implied, it's because they do it themselves.

ok noted. i will initially look into seeing if i can do this myself. tinker with it. hope it comes out fine. i'll be vigilant; heeding willpower's advice

As I mentioned, you're going from dark to lighter rather than the other way around. Depending on how natural you want it to look, you can also have the stylist foil up some small pieces of your original color so it'll look more natural. There's never a middle ground with dye results - either you're walking around with a sense of heightened self esteem, or you're wearing a hat for the next month. Have a look at the vid, not to demonstrate the required experience to do a good job, but rather that the chick in it is damn fine.

You should just go bold. Pamper yourself. Get the best, at the most opulent salon (get a facial and pedicure while you're there). Indulge yourself. A deep, rich, sensual dark golden brown will really bring out your sexy, independent soulful side. Your boyfriend will scarcely recognize you, and wonder "who is this hunky new beau cuddled up beside me?"

1. Use only semi-permanent color. 2. Always choose a shade lighter than your target shade. 3. Read manufacturers instructions carefully twice and follow them strictly to the later. 4. Always do a test strand, you could be 1 in a 100 to be allergic to para-dyes, used in many hair color products. 5. Make sure you do the right timing, timing is important with these products. 6. Have a friend or someone help you, that way you get even coverage. 7. Rub Vaseline around your hairline to protect your skin from stains. 8. Don't wash your hair the day you color your hair, natural oils in your scalp protects it from products. If you hair has build up of products just rinse with water, don't have freshly washed hair. 9. Wash it with a gentle shampoo and condition after applying the color and waiting for processing time.
