refrigerator ice maker on/off

In a refrigerator ice maker with one of those metal bar things....should it be flipped up or down to make ice.

The ice maker in my office is basically one of those fridge units inside a minifridge...and there is a severe shortage of ice. The lever thing seems to be switching back and forth like people cant decide which way is on. I just want my ice and google is not helping.

Yes, this deserves a thead...I am thirsty for something cold.

down = make more ice. Up = stop making ice.

Don't tape it down! In most of these contraptions the lever needs to cycle up and down to pop out ice and then make new ice. If the lever is cycling up and down but is not making ice then there is a problem elsewhere in the system. http://home.howstuffworks.com/icemaker1.htm

Ya .. don't tape it down. It goes up for a reason .. Our's got frozen in the down position, and the ice maker kept making ice, but as it filled up it kept doing a worse and worse job .. until the top half of our freezer was one giant ice block.

lol sorry, I didn't mean permanently. Just long enough for it to make a noticeable amount of ice since I knew it was some sort of automatic shutoff. Thanks for that HSW link...I didn't realize that it lifted the wire every time and set it back down on the ice. Edit: the next page where it describes the commercial level ice maker is sweet. Now I understand why the ice upstairs in the office's main kitchen is so clear and in perfect little cubes. I don't think the ice upstairs is kept as cold though, as our home-style machine down here makes ice that seems to dilute your drink significantly less.

Some freezers have you pull the lever down for ice, and it's making ice the lever will go back up but it would automatically come back down again to keep making more. To stop it, you force the lever up when it's at any lower position. Edit: just read the thread. OP, what fucking rock have you been hiding under? There's some intuition to this stuff.

Hey...I never had one of these ice makers. I assumed that down was correct and when our machine was in the fritz, I was putting it down.

The fact that I kept finding it in other orientations (and that the bucket of ice was not growing) made me doubt my original conclusion...maybe somebody knew better and was raising it up.
