tips on quick methods of de-stressing

Thread Starter
i dont consider myself that much of a worrywart, and am generally pretty laid back in all regards. however, there are some times where i find myself totally tripping balls over things; usually issues that are important in my life, which is normal enough. but i tend to go overboard with the stressing-out in my opinion.

for instance, the bar exam is this weekend for me. while im fairly confident with my preparation, i feel as though im taking crazy pills. since sunday, i think ive had like 3 panic attacks where i started to hyperventilate, and i havent eaten much all week. i think ive had like 3-4 bowls of oatmeal and 6 hard boiled eggs since sunday afternoon, which i forced myself to eat. and when i ate, i constantly felt like throwing up.

so what do you guys do to de-stress? im talking more along the lines of de-stressing before the "event," and not afterward. i have a feeling i know what some answers are going to be, but honest recommendations are definitely appreciated. thanks.

If you dream about wigwams and teepees, you're two tents. Get a strong, professional massage (unbelievable stress release and endorphin rush if it's a good one). Same goes for an Acupuncture sessions. Big stress relief. Focus on the breath, breathing through the stomach Take a bath (although I don't know any guy who has ever taken a bath). Used in the crazy house in the mid 20th century to calm the nutters. Go to the doctor and get meds

Think about the worst that could happen. Really, whatever the scenario might be, it isn't so bad. You're not going to die. You should calm down a bit once you've made this realization.

Otherwise, take some ambien.

Envisioning the worst case scenario (you bomb the bar exam) and realizing that it will not be the end of life as you know it should help. Ambien, though, is for sleeping issues and the OP didn't say he's had sleeping troubles.

OP, those are super classic stressed-to-the-max symptoms. Are you a gym guy or a runner or something? If so, have you been doing your routines or playing sports you enjoy this week? Those physical activities really, really help.

Assuming you aren't looking to get Valium-type drugs, maybe get Pepsid AC or similar to help the "throwing up" feeling, it is the acid reflux kicking in. Prilosec OTC works pretty well but takes a few days to kick in whereas the Pespid is immediate relief type stuff.

I think my ability to cope with just about anything increased substantially after realizing that most of the things that bother me or stress me out can be re-framed as things I have control over. But a hot tub isn't a bad idea.

exercise, lift the not eating thing sounds pathetic. put food in your mouth, chew, and swallow. you may be stressed (and this sounds like an event where stress is legitimate), but that's no excuse not to consume sustenance. do not be a pussy

This. Especially with mineral bath salts, preferably lavender infused. Have with a glass of wine and you'll be too relaxed to stress.

Remind yourself:

1. You've done all the studying you can do.
2. The Bar is looking for competence, not excellence. You can pass with a "C" performance.
3. You are not graded on an absolute scale (i.e., X points out of 100) but accumulate points based upon your ability to rattle off legal concepts and apply them.
4. The grader is looking for your ability to "think like a lawyer," which means that you can start with an erroneous legal proposition and reach an erroneous result, but still get points if you applied the proposition correctly.

+3, if you can do it at work even better. We have a unisex bathroom here that I sometimes go up to.

To be fair, when you're truly stressed the fuck out, it can be tough to eat. Everything just seems so unappetizing and you're cognizant of the fact that you need to eat, because you feel like utter shit from the stress itself and from not eating, but you just fucking can't. I guess it could be different between people though.

To the OP, just take a few deep breaths, and go through the reasons why you might think you're stressed out. Realize that your fears might be overblown, and if you've prepared as well as you say you have, then what's the deal? All you need to do is pass, it's not like college or law school where you had grades and they mattered. Worst case, you don't pass, you wait a few months for a re-take. You'll be fine in either case.

Exercise if you do, don't neglect it just because you have something big coming up. I made the same mistake too
