how about a modern F1, would always be interested to see that..., though the circuit might a bit too rough for that?

Yeah they did it a few years ago, with the ride height well up and not flat out 'cos of the safety issues. (no run-off, just loads of barrier)
Also the circuit favours shorter wheelbase cars with the banking etc. Modern F1 would bottom out too much I think.

I wonder what one of those SWB Can-Am spec. 917's would go round in?

Nick Heidfeld did it in the BMW Sauber a few years ago. I believe he has the overall lap record to this date (although I could very well be wrong). If you watch the video, he doesn't even attempt going on the lower portion of the Karusel and opts for the flat curve. Overall, yes, the course would be too rough on the fragile F1 cars.
