I guess I might be speaking from that latter bias, being a native Mandarin speaker (although Cantonese will get you further) Flushing is far too out of the way for my convenience. My parents used to drive out there on occassion, but if you're more of a stereotypical Manhattaner, a trip out to Flushing is unthinkable.

Thank you for all the advice. I went through this list with my wife and got A LOT of good ideas and made some reservations. One last thing. Where do you guys hang out on a Friday or Saturday night? Nothing too crazy, but maybe a nice bar where we could chill, have a drink and maybe hit the dance floor.

Sorry to hop in your thread, but I have a related question: I'm going to NYC for a week with my younger brother and a friend, but I'm the only one of us three who is 21...though I'm the only one who doesn't actually drink. Any clubs that are halfway decent we could go to?

Since this is a killer thread, I'll tack on an answer to this for future viewers.

My Friday night hangout is occasionally:

Hudson Bar and Books (cigar bar) ... with great scotch and seriously interesting people. They play old James Bond movies and serve good cocktails. If you are under 25 you might not like it. But then again...

This is followed by a very short wander over into the rest of the Meatpacking area. If you want to do the NYC glamour nightlife thing.. right now you go to.. Tenjune. Or the place right across the street from it. The crowd is 21 (or a bit younger with fake id) to 26 mainly. Loud music. Girls in damn short skirts/dresses. On Fri/Saturday you have to play the "bottle service" game, or slip the guy at the door about $100. OR be a group of hot single girls in shorts skirts and you get in free. It's that type of place.

If you want a cool NYC jazz dive experience, find Small's jazz. In/out at any time - unlike the other places that have set times you have to adhere to.
