Something mainstream enough to be promoted heavily on MTV, radio, and in print (by for example, Rolling Stone), in my opinion is not obscure. Obscure is a band that didn't get MTV, radio play, and maybe was only reviewed in a dedicated genre magazine or whatever, if at all.
