Re: Uniqlo socks and underwear

Believe the hype. For me, the underwear scores points for comfort and durability through many washes. I snagged a couple pairs in early June and they've become my favorite pairs since. They're the first ones I'll wear from a clean load of laundry and yet, they still look and feel new. The first part isn't that big of a deal, but most of you probably know what softer underwear feels like after it's been through the washer/dryer gauntlet a few times. Superficially, I dig a lot of the looks and they're cheaper than alternatives from places like GAP.

Likewise, the socks seem to hold up well through many wash cycles. Most of my Old Navy patterned socks looked like hell after one wash, but the Uniqlo offerings still look and feel great.

But I'm with you dudes who aren't about to have someone proxy them some underwear. I did so with some socks, but I stopped short of being all, "And hey, some boxer briefs, too, in interesting colors and patterns!"

T-shirts and belts. I could give a damn about belts as they're mostly covered up. As for T-shirts, the majority of mine come from AA since I find their's to fit me the best of any commonly available T. I wouldn't be opposed to dropping more on T's though considering how often I wear them, it's just it's hard to find high quality ones available year round like at AA.

Depends what 'cheap' is, but...

Socks - Probably the thing I go cheapest on. Mostly: clearance from jcrew, some lands end boot socks I got on sale.

Underwear - MJK/Colby boxer briefs (dunno if they're "cheap", but = or less expensive than boxers from mall stores), Stafford woven boxers from JCpenneys- 3for$10 and fit/comfort is surprisingly good

blazers/sportcoats - pretty much solely from H&M. Mostly b/c I've been shy about making an investment in some quality ones (which would take some $$$) and b/c its damn hard to find a 36 and almost impossible to find 36s

Jeans - not to the point of really cheap like say stf 501s... but I've yet to drop a $100+ on jeans. Mostly b/c I've had good luck with sales and B/S forum. Couple B/S APCs, couple Jcrew 484s, and 1 each of N&F and Our Legacy - both on 50%+ discount.

I almost never go cheap on shirts, shoes, and pants (except for beaters)... and I've recently started to slightly up my knit game.

That being said, I think there are definitely areas I don't mind spending more.

I'll always try and save on tees, boxers, socks, and hoodies. These are usually stuff that I can pick up on sale or at cheaper retail spots.

In the midrange, I'll wait for sales on dress shirts and sweaters.

While I don't necessarily splurge, I will spend more on quality footwear and denim.

As a lifelong cheapskate I feel I can impart some wisdom here: 1. Don't cheap out on anything leather: This means shoes, belts, jackets, etc. The difference between hard, plastic-like $100 shoes and buttery-soft $300 shoes is all the difference in the world. Leather items also last forever, so might as well have something good that lasts forever. 2. Don't cheap out on underwear: Of all the items of clothing you wear, this is the most important in terms of comfort. Pay enough to get good ones. I find really cheap boxers uncomfortable. Spend a few extra dollars and you can have Egyptian cotton or drifit boxers/briefs. Your balls will thank you. 3. Save on things that don't last a long time: This depends on person to person, but for me this is t-shirts, dress shirts, and socks. I can verify what others are saying ... Uniqlo and GoldToe socks are inexpensive, durable, and comfortable.

I agree. I have a couple OCBD's that I need to have the elbows patched. Not sure if they'll be wearable to work, but they'll be awesome to wear casually. There was also a rip on a pair of chinos that the dry cleaners patched up for me. It's definitely good to know that you've worn something enough to have them wear out on you. Kind of like a beat up, ratty pair of skate shoes.
