Scale of the Universe: Pretty amazing...

I frequent newgrounds a ton. By far the most amazing thing on there was this: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/525347 Remembered it after seeing this gif, makes us realize how tiny we actually all are.

Holy shit. I knew we were specs of dust, but I really didn't think there was a star about the size as our solar system.

7 quadrillion Earths could fit inside that thing

Assuming that 7 quadrillion statistic is true, and assuming you could drive across the entire planet Earth in 1 second, it would take someone over 221 Million years to drive across that largest star. 7 Quadrillion seconds converted into years comes to around 221 Million years if my math was correct. This also assumes that the 7 quadrillion smaller spheres inside of the larger sphere have the same total surface area - and it's been too long since I've done any of that to know if it's true.

very cool. the size of these stars just boggles the mind. from wikipedia:

"If the Earth were to be represented by a sphere one centimeter in diameter, the Sun would be represented as a sphere with a diameter of 109 centimeters, at a distance of 117 meters. At these scales, VY Canis Majoris would have a diameter of approximately 2.3 kilometers, assuming the upper limit estimate of its radius."

No, they don't. Surface area increases by the square of the radius, and the volume by the cube of the radius. A sphere with 7 quadrillion times the volume would only have 280 billion times the surface area,

Impressive until you see recent pictures of Carney Wilson

I've posted this before in a similar thread, but worth repeating:

Canis Majoris? Big dawg? That's the best they could come up with for the largest star in the universe? Lol. Come on scientists...step it up.

these things were named hundreds, sometimes thousands of years ago

I wasn't aware that "big dawg" was a colloquialism in ancient Greece.
