Never? When you stop enjoying it, and can afford better?

When you start hating them and want to travel more comfortably.

^ haha +1. Problem is, pretty quickly you get to hate anything less than a four star hotel. And then you realize that most of those are disgusting too.

Only time I have stayed in them in when I am bicycling cross country or back packing. Even then I still enjoy a luxury hotel when I really want to relax.

That's true JoelF, most hotels are depressing garbage.

I'm probably the most bipolar person in the world on this front...

I stay at cheapass hostels or low-end "business hotels" (in Japan, for example) whenever traveling on my own dime, but I travel so much for work and have so many free Starwood nights that about 3/4 of my travel is free and in beautiful 4* or 5* properties.

Of course I prefer a nice hotel but not if I'm paying for it. If a girl is tagging along I feel obliged to use my points and upgrade to something nice though.

I dunno, most hostels are truly disgusting. When traveling for personal pleasure I look for charm and location over amenities... but my hostel days are decidedly over. I'd stay at a pension-level place today though.

Hostels are awesome, especially if you are traveling alone and want to meet people. Never done the hostel route in the US though (but I often get lunch next to the chicago hostel and it looks pretty nice and always seems busy).

When you stop wanting to meet people (and just stick with who you bring with), then its hotel time.

Of course...I did just priceline the shit out of a 4* in denver and at double occupancy, its about what I would expect to pay for a hostel. Too bad its not a starwood property (and I don't think priceline stays count anyways)

Okay great because I'm 27 and me and my gf stayed in a hostel in Chicago and it felt borderline weird to be so "old" there. But really it's about all we can afford and we really enjoy brief, frequent travel.
