Are Designer Sunglasses Worth The Price?

Excellent article about how, basically, one company makes most sunglasses...

Are you in the market for a new pair of designer sunglasses this summer?

It's the season for it, and you can spend hundreds of dollars on your next pair of shades. Some Prada and Bulgari pairs will run you nearly $500, and that's if you don't need prescription lenses. Even more moderate design labels like Ray-Ban or REVO can cost a couple of hundred bucks.

Designer shades are big business, even in this economy. I keep hearing about the new age of frugality, but I'm not seeing much of it at the mall. Sunglass Hut's same-store sales in the U.S. rose 10.8% in the first quarter, pretty much erasing the slump in early 2009.

But are these expensive brands worth it? How much better are they, really, than the $25 pairs you can get in your local pharmacy?

Before you spend big money on your next pair of designer shades, here are six things you should know.

1. Most sunglasses are made by the same company. Do you prefer the "quality" of Ray-Ban to Oakley? Do you think Bulgari is better than Dolce & Gabbana, or Salvatore Ferragamo is better than Prada? Wake up. They're all made by one company, Italian manufacturer Luxottica-one of the biggest consumer companies that consumers have never heard of. Luxottica also makes sunglasses branded Burberry, Chanel, Polo Ralph Lauren, Paul Smith, Stella McCartney, Tiffany, Versace, Vogue, Persol, Miu Miu, Tory Burch and Donna Karan.

"We manufacture about 70% of those brands in our factories in Italy, and the balance in America and China," says Luxottica spokesman Luca Biondolillo. "We do the design, the manufacturing, and the marketing," he adds. The company makes most of those brands under license, working closely with designers at the relevant fashion houses. But it owns several brands itself, including Ray-Ban, Oakley, Oliver Peoples and REVO.

Question is, why only exist designer sunglasses ?

Luxxotica makes sunglasses to the company's requested quality. Which is why the "Made in Italy" Persols aren't the same as the "Hand Made in Italy" ones. Although they're still not as nice as the ones from the Ratti days.

FWIW, Marcolin makes some sunglasses as well (Tom Ford, Montblanc, etc...)

Interesting piece, it's common knowledge that Luxxotica has a hammer lock on the sunglass market in both manufacturing and retail outside of the optical channels. Pretty close to vertical integration actually. I own Serengeti and Maui Jim shades and I'm happy with their performance and they are not part of the Luxxotica empire (yet).

The frame is just one aspect of the glasses. Lenses are also important.

Stick to brands like Salt Optics, Oliver Goldsmith, Mykita, Orgreen, Cutler & Gross etc

I must live in a d-bag area since I only know persols from those.

Cartier makes their own in France and they are light years ahead of all the aforementioned ones.

Maui Jim makes a high quality lens, they build it from 7 different layers (and patented the process). I know Seregenti lenses are supposed to be pretty good too, in particular their drivers

I personally don't think so... my rayban wayfarers are my most expensive pair of sunglasses and I don't ever plan on purchasing another pair that expensive

+1

The same thing can be said about China. I've seen Chinese shirts which have excellent pattern matching, MOP buttons, etc... and were bette made than "Made In Italy" shirts I've seen from other companies.

What specifically makes the $2200 sunglasses "better"? Better style or better technology and protection?

What's more important to you? Protecting your eyes and enhancing your vision in bright light, or simply having really good looking shades? The very best in eye protection can be had for $200 - $300 in a pair of Maui Jim, Revo, Serengeti, Costa Del Mar, etc. Even old school Ray Ban glass lenses are fantastic. I think spending anything a bill or two over that amount is simply paying for a name & style, not buying a superior product. But for many, paying $2200 for style is a probably a regular thing.
