This is the only way I've ever known -- picked it up from my parents a couple dozen years ago when I was very small and wanted breakfast when they didn't.

as party tricks go, it wears out fast. but flat surface is the way to go ... cracking it on the edge of something more often leads to a broken yolk.

OP - I used to use a sharp edge like a bowl but have found that a flat surface like a countertop works much better.
