I have a ton of money to spend, but not a clue where to spend it and on what. I'm relatively new to fashion and have been lurking on fashion boards for a few months. Your response may be to lurk more, but I have little time to spend this money, you see. So I want you senior members to post what you think I should have in my wardrobe (shirts, coats, shorts, pants, socks, shoes, ties, hats, underwear, sunglasses). You can be as basic or as specific as you want. I'm a 20-year-old, male college student who rarely goes to formal events. I need hats, so if you could include them, that would be wonderful.

Here's a list of the retailers in my town that appear decent:

Ross

Old Navy

Kmart‎

Men's Wearhouse

Red Wing Shoe Store

J C Penney Co

Kohl's Department Store

American Eagle

Marshalls

Lna's Fanzz In Fashions

Sears

I would get one hat from each one of those stores.

First, are you really in Harlem or just a Jelly Roll Morton fan? 'Cause if you are in Harlem, you aren't far from some really great shops. The A train runs both ways. If not, and those are your best options, then buy a few pieces that are the best of what your shops have to offer and find a decent alterations tailor and make sure they fit just right. Browse the pics here to see what the right fit is. If there is one thing that you can figure out here, it is what a the right fit is for a jacket.

Second, you might check out Will's blog at Suitable Wardrobe. He has some great ideas about how to start a new wardrobe. These are the best three "starter" posts in my opinion.

Finally, ditch the hats. Hats are cool but hats are also a stand out accessory. Dressing in the SF way (which you obviously want since you are here) isn't about getting the stand out accessory. It is more about getting the fit just right and learning something about drape and whether you like it. That and some obsession with mismatched ties and pocket squares, unless of course your pocket square is always a cream colored one from Hermes, and then you get bashed for entirely different reasons. Maybe that should wait for another post.

Welcome to the forum.

Why is that? Before your Dad returns home to find his stash missing? Seriously, if you are on time pressure and clueless, the choices you make are gonna to poor and confused.
