Really though, if you can afford it just buy a nice set so you don't have to worry about replacing it in the future.

There are a lot of factors into what board might be best. It's a nice decor piece if you have a nice looking chessboard setup. If you don't have the space then the roll up vinyl is a smart play, but there are more stylish ones you can get that you can leave out and have look nice. I've used the cheaper wooden kind of sets(though it was so long ago I only remember the pieces being wood, don't really remember the board). But the wooden pieces definitely felt cheap and were pretty light. The set I got after this was a cheap glass set, a lot like if not exactly this http://www.amazon.com/Beautiful-Glas...9267442&sr=8-2 A cheap glass set looks better than a cheap wood/whatever set IMO. The only problem is I find it a bit more annoying to visualize some moves when the frosted/clear pieces look pretty similar, but that's just me. If I play any games nowadays, I usually just use the glass set with my brother. We would on occassion use our vintage chess set, porcelin pieces on a marble board, but one game a few years ago he chucked one of the pieces and it got decapitated, had to superglue it back on. Not cool. Not cool.(if you decide to go with that kind of chessboard btw, be careful since pieces can chip easily, and watch who you play haha)

Foldable (vinyl) boards are far better than their rollable counterparts... (No us source sorry).

LOL there are brands of chess sets?

the OP wanted a chess set in the 30$ range. that pretty much puts the standard plastic tourney chess pieces with the vinyl roll up board as the best one. its good for tourney practice too.

If I had a chess question, I'd walk a few blocks over to this place:

http://www.chess-shop.com/

The street it is on in Greenwich Village, NYC has 2 or 3 chess shops. I can't fathom how the make enough $ for one to stay open, much less 3. But there there are. The shops are a stones throw from the corner of Washington Square Park, in which scenes from the Bobby Fischer (sp?) movie were filmed.

Their windows have darn cool chess sets of all types. Looks like a top quality place.

This is interesting as I used to live very close to there (6th and Waverly). They do take chess seriously at that park.
