A mis-interpretation perhaps. I would offer my best advice and if that's for them to leave, then I would say so and leave it at that if I had nothing to gain. But if I did have long-term prospects at the company, I'd let the person know that it could be, potentially, to their advantage to stay. I would also make an effort to make that person happier.
