What's the deal with external HDs?

Thread Starter
I am attempting to buy an external HD for my dad to keep music on (the computer at home doesn't have a large enough HD).

Last year I bought this:

http://www.amazon.com/SimpleTech-Sig...8899139&sr=1-5

For $65. Amazon is even popping up with the receipt so I know that's what I payed. Now they are almost twice as much? What gives? The cheapest external HD I can find now via google/amazon is this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ago-_-22242002

Half the capacity, not quite half the price, and it's been a year! I thought hard drive prices got lower over time?

Any insight, or suggestions for a hardrive at 60gb or above that would allow me to move the music from my mac to it for access from a pc?

1.5 TB for $85.

At some point, HDs don't get cheaper, you just get a whole lot more for the same price.

the one he posted above is pretty good value imo

or you could buy a hard drive + enclosure, that's what i did

The one you bought is 160GB. The newegg one is 80 GB, and it is a 2.5" drive. Not only is there a storage difference, but the Newegg 2.5" drive power straight off the USB port; so no need to plug it in like the 160GB drive. Here's a 500GB drive for $59.99 after rebate. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&Sku=H450-8210

This is also solid advice. Get a SATA enclosure, and you can swap out drives when they die or when you want to upgrade.

Are there any compatibility issues to be concerned with for storing files long term?

I ask because I've got an older machine that wont recognize the HD. Should this be a concern going forward as well?

if you get an enclosure with usb2.0 port + HD
and in a decade or w-e years if your computer has only usb3.0 ports then you only have to get a new enclosure(with usb3.0) and keep the same HD and it will work

I did this with a couple of 500Gb notebook drives and am happy with the results.
