Ship an item without receiving payment?

Sanity check - I am selling something on another forum and a moderator offered to buy my item (which is going for around $85) but wants me to ship the item before he/she makes payment. The rational was that my feedback rating (which is 9 or so) was too low. I've never been asked to do this and I immediately refused but maybe I'm in the wrong? What would you do in this case? Ship the item or not?

I would never ship without payment. If he's nervous, he can put it on his CC and pay the fees.

What about mailing COD? Doesn't work internationally though.

This is how some internet scam stories start out.

Who cares if you have low feedback? He pays first, and then you ship. Otherwise, you sell it to somebody else.

This, definitely.

If you decide to ship it prior to receiving the payment, PM me. I have thousands of dollars worth of purchases I would like to make. Seriously though, don't do it. There is a certain risk return tradeoff that is inherent in these sort of internet transactions. As a buyer I recognize that there is a cost savings when purchasing goods on the internet; however, there is the possibility that the good isn't as advertised, not a proper fit (if clothing) or you may never receive the item if the seller isn't reputable and trustworthy. If he isn't willing to accept these risks and pay in advance (as he should), wait until someone comes along that is.

Eh, I wouldn't outright dismiss it. It really depends on the forum/community. I used to buy and sell a lot of computer stuff on Anandtech back in the day. It's pretty customary there for people with low feedback to ship first to someone who is really established. Never had an issue.

As a moderator on another forum and a regular seller, I wouldn't do it. Honestly, it's coming pretty close to misusing his position as a moderator to ask you to do that. I have shipped before without receiving payment, but only to people who were regular customers, not to a new (to me) buyer. Find another buyer.

I believe that moderators should pay for nothing. Please send stuff.

use paypal. That way if you screw him, he can get the money back. Why on earth would you do something like that. I mean I dont know what the used dildo boards are like, but I would imagine you can sell whatever it is to someone else who wont ask for something so rediculous.

Doesn't Paypal have some sort of a escrow program that the buyer pays but they hold onto the money until they get the goods?

I wouldn't do it until I get paid.

No idea - that's really the first time in 10+ years I've seen this I didn't know if this was common place on other forums and decided to open thread. Needless to say, I didn't ship the item.

Amen. I've also been a member on this board for over 2 years with about 10 feedback.. it's not like I just joined last week or something.

Not sure... too much of a hassel to deal with anyways.
