If you're working with limited real estate I suggest that you acquire young starts from a local farmer's market instead of starting your own seeds. You never know where those seed came from or if they're going to do well --maybe until it's too late to try again. Local farmers and nurseries grow plants that work locally. They can give you good advice. Home Depot and similar stores get their plants from all over. Their plants are often diseased or unfit for the localities where they are sold. Consider it.

Thai basil is nice....

That is an interesting point. I have had some success and some failure, so I figured it was just me on the learning curve.

I have a pretty wide mix of sources I used this year. . . seeds I started, hardware store plants, and farmer's market plants.

I started parsley from seeds, but it died shortly after sprouting. The other seeds are growing. . . slowly.

The other plants all seem to be doing fine so far.

Anybody have some decent herb salad recipes? @ crazyquick: we grow Thai basil as my wife uses it for pho. Try making a pot sometime! We are also growing lemongrass. I'm surprised it grows. I only got one plant and it is already over 3' tall. Offhand, anybody know when I harvest it?

SHIT! I forgot about my mint plant. Hmm...probably dead now. Even though it was outside, it never seemed to catch any rain right on the window ledge. It was a very nice mint plant from the nursery my mom works at

Mint doesn't like to die. I used to mow over the mint at my parents' house. It always came back.

Mint grows like a weed...but this mint was in a pot and has not been watered in a long time...
