They read very like German wartime notices. Most people thought it was a joke, but he was serious. "The next day, the voluntary constable approached him as he was sitting on a bench, waiting for 12 o'clock to come round. He said, 'That's a nice gun you've got there,' and jumped on Gardes when he was changing the magazine. I had to go to Guernsey that morning to pick up a cheque for the island, so I missed the action." Only on Sark could an attempted military takeover be foiled with such comic timing."

When did that happen? Vatican City only became an official political entity/state in 1929 under a treaty with Benito Mussolini, of all people.

I mean, obvs the Pope and company had been regarded with something approaching de facto sovereignty since returning to Italy after the Avignon residence. But they weren't granted official sovereignty until 1929.
