Do you want to live a long life?

By long I mean to the point that you have to depend on others to move around, run errands, cook for you, meet your basic needs, etc.

I was going to post this in Health and Body but the question isn't about how to live longer. It's more about if you had the option and could choose, would you choose to live as long as possible or die earlier but avoid all the limitations and health problems that come with being old.

I guess it's a question of quantity vs quality. I know I would at least not want to end up in a retirement home, it just seems like daycare for old folks. I'd like to be able to live long only if I am still able to wake up and think "What do I want to do today?" without being so limited in my choices.

From a broader perspective as well, there would be benefits to lowering life expectancy (hypothetically of course!!!). Health care for example would have a lot more resources to devote to other areas.

Anyways, I'm only 24, it'd be interesting to hear some different perspectives, I'm sure some of you have thought about this far longer than I have!

No.

And how do you only have 41 posts in four years here?

I've considered this in the past. Once I am no longer able to wipe my own backside I would see no reason to continue living, that would be the breaking point for me. I would hope I have the strength of will to end my life at that point.

I want to live a happy life. When you are truly happy it doesn't really matter for how long will it last. You are ready to leave any minute.

That's what Tom's Ford film "Single man" was about

Don't really want to live past 65 or so. Both my dad's parents died before 70 so it may happen.

I'm from a very long-lived family, so I don't think I have a choice. They all seemed quite happy when they were old. One grandfather is 92 and going strong, living on his own (well, with Grandma), chopping wood, gardening, working in the shop, etc. The other grandfather is 85 or 86 and still works as a security guard for the local convention center (including security at rock concerts, if you can believe it). And no, he's not the tired old security guard who finds your lost keys; he's the guy who will quite literally throw you out of the place.

So yeah, I do.

I have already outlived my mother.
And quickly closing in on my father.

No. I want to live a healthy, happy and a wealthy life - however long that may be.

I have a great aunt who's 96 and sharp as a tack. She only recently started needing medical attention for heart failure. Despite how long she's lived, she managed to outlive most of her younger siblings (my grandpa included) and her own daughter who died of breast cancer a few years ago. Apparently she asked one of my family members "when will it all end?" not in any kind of horror stricken or sad way, but more in a weary "I've run my course here" kind of way. I found that interesting.

I want to live as long as I am productive, cognizant, self-aware, and reasonably active. Not a minute longer.

Most everyone wants to live long, few (if any) want to get old and weak. Given the human condition, tough thngs to reconcile.

In my circles, I am surrounded by people in their late 70s into their early 90s that go out to the best places in town, golf, attend all the big events, and generally seem to be really enjoying life. Most of my weight loss motivation was in hopes of being 85 and having the owner at the latest "in" adult spot know me by name. As long as I can go out for foie gras and wine, I want to keep going.

See I don't even want that. Like if I died tomorrow and somehow I could recognize that I had died, I wouldn't care.
