My ancestors were doing the same thing 180-220 years ago. They used zero electricity, zero fossil fuels. Not only were they making shoes, they made guns and furniture too! And their buildings were more aesthetically pleasing.
They organized themselves around the church (theocracy) instead of some fuzzy hippie ideas about ecological impact.
Hippies make me chuckle.
