Yes, sorry about that, the Socialists have governed it for a long time now (and they actually haven't emphasized what you, as a tourist or appreciative student would like about it- (e.g. our great, traditional and historical heritage including the fine arts and antiques as well as the bespoke clothiers in the first district...even though I know for a fact that ex-leftist-chancellor Kreisky did have his shoes made at Materna's [I've seen his grotty lasts there]). Yet, don't despair, it ought to get better in the next years, or at least I'd hope so...[also there are much greater historical processes at work there but I can't get into that, here].

No no quite the contrary even though the SPÖ may have governed it "for a long time " as you say. Its not necessarily the politics of the Socialists that makes me say "shame about the people". Its the views of the people in general, something no modern day political party can change. One man has already put that frame of mind and view of the world on them. ; )

I'm sorry that you'd think like that. All I can say is that, even though the people here have many faults and the place may be a bit provincial, it still is- in my experience- a very secure and homely place to live in (and I have lived in many other cities and countries around the globe, too). And I- at least am talking about the present, although there have been many crazy and creative minds that were imprinted by the genius loci of the place, too; come to think of it, almost all the foundations of the ideologies of the 20th century, and thereby the present world, have been laid here, too: Nazism, Marxism, Freudian psycholanalysis, Zionism; or, they at least have majorly been influenced in their development by its somewhat morbid clime. Yet, to blame this historical outcome on its present inhabitants would be a bit far-fetched and absurd in my view.

Although i would passionatly love to debate this with you Jerome, I believe this thread is not the place for it. However if i do stick around on SF to fulfill the 100 post requirement to post on the Current Events, Power and Money sub forum then I would sincerely love to take this topic up. But for now as a sign of respect for Fritzl´s thread its best to enjoy the pictures
