Moving to NY

I am moving to NY soon and would like some input from the NY SF residents. I will be working mainly in Westchester, so I am considering moving to the White Plains area. I know it's no NYC, but I am not looking to move to NYC at this time. This may be a temporary move and I dont want to pay NYC rent/deposit right now, plus I will have a car and I dont want a long commute. However, I really would like to be able to get into NYC easily.

In addition to WP, I have been looking at some places in Yonkers. Unfortunately, I dont know anything about Yonkers except there seem to be some really nice new apartment/lofts. Would I be bored out of my mind in Yonkers (early 30s) compared to WP? Any other areas in Westchester or even Connecticut that I should consider? I am looking for an apartment/condo.

I know the world is drab and lifeless outside of NYC, but please try to offer some suggestions (besides kill yourself now.) Thanks.

I can't speak to the surrounding area, but you're only about 25-30 minutes out of midtown Manhattan via the Metro North train. It'll go about five bucks each way so it's very affordable regardless of whichever you choose, the city's still at your fingertips (although it's no upper west side).

White Plains is nice, but stuff is pretty expensive there too, it's bestchester for a reason...

I lived in White Plains for my first job. It is nice enough. One of the good things is that you can catch an express train to NYC from there.

Thanks guys. Anyone know anything about Yonkers? Is it terrible? Seems like I can get a little more for my money there.

I do the Grand Central - White Plains commute everyday. Takes about 35 mins on the express, but its not cheap. During peak hours, a single ticket costs ~$20 round trip.

As for White Plains - I hear the rent there isn't all that cheap. Plenty of decent food in the area though.

Yeah, White Plains is kind of expensive but doable, at least from what I'm seeing. The upper end of my budget is ~2k/mo. I will need to go to the office and drive to clients throughout CT, so I thought WP might be the best as far as central location. Also, I think it would be really expensive to keep a car in the city and the commute could be a pain.

I'm also looking at Yonkers, Stamford, New Rochelle, etc., but I dont know anything at all about those places. I dont have time to visit before the move, so I'm just trying to get a feel for the areas from members here.

White Plains is really expensive for what it is and frankly boring as fuck. There's some malls and that is it. One thing about NYC is that the city just sucks all the life out of the burbs.

I underestimated how much a ticket would cost from Grand Central to New Haven when I stayed with a friend last month. Trip in and out of NYC each day for four days. Big to my limited budget while there.

A 10 trip ticket would probably have worked out cheaper for you.

So Feyn, you live in the city and work in White Plains? Do you ever drive or just take the train? If you drive, how is the commute?

I commute to WP 4 times a week by train. I have done the drive once, with JoelF above actually, and it was fine, but I would expect the traffic to be terrible during rush hour. He can tell you more about it.

Okay fellas,
I've got it narrowed down to two choices. White Plains or Stamford, which one? I can get a better place for same money or less in Stamford and I'll be working in White Plains and at clients' operations in CT. Seems like it takes about the same amount of time to get into NYC from both places and Stamford waterfront looks pretty cool. I wont have time to visit, so I'd like some your take on the merits of each place. Thanks guys.

I used to commute to Armonk from Manhattan every day for a client years ago.
Traffic wasn't bad actually. I live downtown so getting out of Manhattan took the most time. After that, it was quite smooth. Commuting home on Fridays was painful tho - lots of people swarm into the city then.

Can you park the car at work or overnight at Westchester Train Depot and live near Grand Central Terminal ? Tudor City or Vernon Blvd Queens are less than 10 minutes (within 5 minutes with good timing) of GCT, and are within you budget. Cars are painful and expensive in NYC.
