as soon as i realized i was gaining weight after years of being super skinny i tried to start running. my lung capacity was shit from years of smoking and i just couldnt do it. I quit that day cold turkey.. shit sucked, but wasnt terrible. I still have a smoke now and then but i am never going to end up like i was i tried one of those e cig things and it got me my nicotine fix, but i always enjoyed the act of smoking more than the nicotine and the vapor just didnt replace smoke at all

I guess I was lucky in that I basically just stopped enjoying cigarettes and quit without trouble. But the people I know who have had success usually quit cold turkey. I think the gum/patches etc. keep you in the smoker mindset and lead you to relapse.

that said, it's important that if you do slip, you don't think that you're hopeless and give up.

Often I always heard mostly people wants to quit smoking but they can't, and I understand why they even cannot do it because it been their habit already and its hard to stop. I think in my own way the effective way to quit smoking since I observed it to my friends that successfully quit their smoking habit are they divert their attention in other things, instead of thinking to smoke. They do exercise regularly, drink plenty of juices, eat veggies and keep their self busy. I know its hard but my friends done it successfully/

I was a heavy smoker for years--2 to 3 packs a day. I chose a day a couple of months away to stop. On that day I flew to Las Vegas, walked out of the airport, had 3 cigs in row (it had been a long flight from the East coast) and threw the pack away.

Checked into the Paris hotel, hit the casino and played the slots with the smokers and drank like a fish all night. Spent two days and nights in smoke filled rooms hitting the booze.

I haven't smoked in 10 years. Smoke and smokers don't bother me at all.

I've quit a handful of times throughout my life, having stopped for good July 09. It's usually a rough period for me when I quit, withdrawl, quick with temper, ect. This time I used a combination of Acupunture Detox and Wellbutrin, the former being very effective at maintaining an even keel thru those first 2-3 weeks. Cravings were negligible, craziness near 0%, highly recommended.

If you feel like to puff drink lots of water. The persons desire to smoke is just an unconscious diversion of being thirsty. Water helps in cleansing toxins brought by smoking.

A couple of folks mentioned Allan Carr's Easyway to Stop Smoking, which I can vouch for as well. Cold turkey doesn't work for most people and everyone knows smoking is bad. Carr's method is to methodically shoot down all your rationalizations for continuing to smoke and makes you realize that you aren't giving up anything when you quit smoking. Check your local library, they will likely have a copy.
