Buying a plane ticket for a baby not yet born

Anyone had to do this before?
Baby is due in November, flight is the end of February. Booking tix now before prices get jacked up.

Continental helpline said that you can't book for an unnamed person and the ticket must be booked once the baby is born. I'm thinking I can just put any generic name on the ticket, since it's not like the baby will have ID or anything. Or can I just buy two seats for myself in my name (like an overweight person would do?)

This is for a domestic flilght.

Don't babies fly for free on their mothers' laps?

Book the baby, if you must/want, as

Baby (your last name)

Alternatively spring for a first class seat and have baby in lap.

Yes, but we find it easier to just plop the car seat in the airplane seat, hope for sleep, and enjoy the flight! That's why I want to book the tix now, prices are still reasonable enough to allow for this.

I specifically asked the woman on the phone this and she said they don't do that. She generally wasn't too helpful though. That's why I was thinking I may be better off with some nondescript name that works for either a boy or girl.

Just book two seats for the mother.

This. You can buy more than one seat for any given passenger.

Should you decide to come up with a fake baby name, make it something fun like Theobold Cornelius [ last name ] or Pippie Longstockings [ last name ]. Come up with a crazy story about why you chose the name, then report their reactions back to us.

Better yet, start a thread in Dumb Threads and let us suggest names. I will put my money on Connemara Wilkinson[ last name ]

if you book a ticket at price X under the name john smith, and then go back later and change the name, you will have to pay the difference.

here's the thing - you are having a baby. this baby will suck out every penny of savings or money that you have or will ever have. don't fight it.

have a nice day.

Come on, doesn't anyone here subscribe to the will smith school of parenting:

"We tell the kids mommy and daddy are rich; you kids are broke!"

of course my kids aren't scheduled to be in any karate kid movies...

That baby is not even born yet and there are already people whining that their comfort is disturbed.
