does the brown briefcase actually look this brown?.. meaning is it due to lighting or is it this color?

Those pictures are very close to the actual color.

yes, but allegedly they fade rather nicely to yield some contrast w the leather.

I have a tan 256 and frequently wonder if i should have gotten brown.

I have a brown sportsman bag and I say the brown shade depends on lightning too. Under the sun it looks more light, or even purple-ish. Indoor however, the brown is the last pic in that link.

So what's the deal with Cranes and the 257? Are they out? It hasn't been available on the website for a while. You can get to the product page from google, but you can't add it to your cart.

Here's mine - about a year's worth of use.

Is the 256 big enough for a macbook (black plastic), charger, newspaper, ipod, point and shoot camera , and a kindle/ipad?

yep, pretty much that color. I have a brown duffel bag and a tan briefcase and I like both colors a lot, but prefer the tan for the briefcases myself.

Yes, you could also probably fit a thin book in there as well.

I went up to the 257 to carry a macbook pro 15" and your other ideal load components. The 256 could fit them--barely, but was so tight it made it impractical for everyday use for me. Also, the big toothed zipper on these tends to scratch your hands and your computer trying to get things in, particularly when filled to capacity. I found the bigger back works much better when trying to haul a computer as well. I think these bags work best for what they were originally designed: papers, books, pens and other small items, not computers. Also, the 257 in real life does not seem as wide or bulky as the measurements suggest. Perhaps because the soft sided canvas droops a little and pulls down under load, making it seem less wide. The 256 is still much sleeker though (if you can call any Filson bag sleek).

I have a 256, and I can easily fit my computer, a shitload of articles, lunch and what not. Pretty perfect size for everyday use imo. Only thing I dont like is the floppy handle...
