Just curious if somebody have visited my strange country

What were your impressions then? Or is anyone going to visit Russia in the nearest future? Any advice needed?

I'm gonna get the popcorn...

No. I have wanted to for ~10 years, but am afraid of rampant corruption. And the fear of ending up in a Russian prison.

This is the first thing I think about whenever anybody mentions working in Russia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Browder http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84MsRuC-1l8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8fNsyRltsw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tk5qJd_xiug Is working in Russia really as dangerous as he makes it out to be?

Yes and I liked it a lot. Went just before Christmas (Western Christmas) and couldn't believe that it didn't get below freezing, even at night. Can't wait to go back.

I went to Russia in a foreign exchange type of program to study Russian. I was in Saint Petersburg. My impression of Russian people is that they are very friendly when you are friends with them or are in their home or know them personally, but are kind of rude and obnoxious in public. All in all I had a very good time and would definitely go back though.

I'm staying in Moscow all the time... There are plenty of Russian speaking members here.

I really enjoy visiting graves of famous people, so there would be great opportunities to do that with famous Russians like Chekhov, Tolystoy, Pushkin, etc. but I find the country itself undesirable. It's not worth the hassle when there are a hundred other countries worth visiting.

May go to Belgorod in the next year or so.

Why are there so many good chess players from Russia?
Given I'm an ethnic minority, I heard some horror stories about going there.
But my friend (of the same minority) did go to Moscow and St. Petersburg but he had the luxury of having a spouse who works at the Hyatt and I'm guessing they don't let employees steer too far.

Having worked in a field with plenty of Russian people, I know a little verbal. Cyrillic would drive me nuts though - only know a few words by memorization.

Is this a serious question?

Serious as a heart attack.

There was only one non-Soviet chess world champion during the Cold War. Russians (and Eastern Europeans) continue to dominate as well.
