fireworks in asia are on anabolic steroids and cheap too.
if you hate fireworks stay a 1000 miles away from any asian city during its festivals/celebrations/new years parties/ect that may involve fireworks.
I was in Macao for Chinese New Year a few years back (2004 or 5 maybe), and they sell pretty much any fireworks you can imagine on the waterfront for the public to let off. There are zillions of people there, launching them all over the place...it's seriously fucking dangerous, you are just walking along the sidewalk when ZOOOOOOOOOOOM a fucking rocket goes off three inches in front of you. Dudes are jumping all over the place to avoid getting shot in the ass. It's nuts.
I love fireworks. My family goes big and we get all dangerous with it, but its fun. This year, we only had 3 people get hit and two canisters blow up in the tube on the ground. Its stupid, people get hurt... but it beats the firework shows because you are a part of the action.
Fireworks are great. I'm partially with you in that I can do without the noise (and those silly firecracker strings that are so popular on Chinese New Year are totally idiotic) but the rockets that shoot up and explode into bursts of color are amazingand awesome and if you don't like them, it's sort of sad that you've become such a grumpy old man. IMO proximity is the most important thing for enjoying fireworks. Being right under a professional display is totally awesome - watching them from afar does get a bit boring. Last night we did a bunch of home ones but when you're right there it's really, really great.
They can be great, if done properly. I don't like people setting off fireworks themselves, we had an accident a few years back when a drunk guy at a party nearby sent up a rocket that, well, didn't go up. Instead it hit the back of my sisters jacket and burnt a hole. If it's done professionaly and co-ordinated I'm all for it, but I can't say I like seeing 100 of the same rockets blowing up in a matter of minutes.
At the end of this month I will be holding the same type of firework the guy in this picture is holding.
They shoot sparks up about 10 yards into the air for 10 or so seconds before giving of a big boom out the bottom.
Hopefully I will not die (or lose a leg, or half my face).
