New to Boston would appreciate your input!

Just moved to Brookline, MA and was hoping people could point me towards some good places. It's overwhelming moving to a new city, so any help would be appreciated.

Specifically:
- good tailor/alterations place (to take in jackets, sleeves, shirts, etc.)
- good restaurants (cheap or expensive), especially a good Chinese/Dim Sum place
- best supermarkets
- any other recommendations are welcome

I do have access to a car, but places close to me would be best especially since I have discovered Boston traffic!

Thanks in advance.

I used to live there..for suits you have bb on newbury st. For supermarket you have what used to be star market close to BU.i think its shaws now.
I didn't like the Chinese restaurants there but there are some great Thai and Japanese around ur area.Try fugakyu on Brookline ave for Japanese. There is also cafe Mami in porter sq. Which has delicious spicy beef bowl.Brookline ave has a nice Thai place called rodee (sp) and newbury st has thai basil (try their golden triangles u lucky bastard!)

Boston/Brookline is pretty easy to figure out. I was in Brookline for a couple years about 4 years ago. The best supermarket in the area is Whole Foods on Washington St. right at the Brookline/Brighton line. If your not into the organic food thing, there is a Star Mkt (shaws) on Beacon St. right in between Washington Sq. and Cleveland Circle which is pretty good and they just renovated about 2 years ago. As suggested above, try fugakyu and also make sure to go to Golden Temple on Beacon st. in washington Sq. Best Chinesse food in Brookline in my opinion. If you're anywhere near beacon, its all a quick c-line ride away. If you come into Boston proper, there are too many good restaurants and bars to list so the best thing would be to just try as many as possible. As for tailors in the city, i go to a guy downtown but everyone on this forum swears by someone in Cambridge(can remember his name) but im sure someone else will chime in on that. Great city, walk around to get used to everything. Fenway to the waterfront can be walked w/in a couple of hours.

Cheers.

Thanks so much, guys.

Aniketos & Masshole, I'll give those places a try. I've only shopped at the Stop & Go at Coolidge corner area which I wasn't impressed with so I'll give Shaw's & Whole Foods a try.

NH_Clark, is that the name of a tailor?

This thread might have some differences with the OP in the other thread but this was from last week and had good recs http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=186690 Brookline is solid some other good food places not mentioned. You can look them up on yelp or something (boston yelp community is a bit overzealous so always lots of info and reviews but mainly great for locations and menus): - Brookline Spa (great by the slice pizza and solid sandwiches) - Pomodoro (great italian. also has a location in north end) - Orinoco (venezuelan food but more upscale/modern. good drinks too. also another location in south end) - Fugakyu (mentioned but great sushi) - Elephant Walk (great french/cambodian food. nice atmosphere) - Clear Flour Bakery (fantastic breads and pastries) - Whole Foods on washington st (self explanatory but also easily the best cheese selection in brookline) - Trader joes on coolidge corner (duh)

Ah, I didn't notice that other thread. The responses there are great, especially yours, chronoaug.

I play basketball too, so do let me know if you find any good indoor pickup. I'm looking for a place where people are there to play good ball, but also have fun and get a good run in rather than hog the ball and argue about every play. I have a car so I don't mind driving a bit to get there if needed or to pay fees.
