Does anyone remember watching the Frugal Gourmet? It's one of the earliest shows I recall growing up. I think I was impressed by his kitchen. And I didn't know what the words 'frugal' nor 'gourmet' meant.

Looking back now, the show is humorously quaint. He stumbles with delivering his lines in that clip. In another clip, he's noticeably reading off a sheet of paper that's on the countertop. Probably notebook paper.

I always liked that show growing up. Seattle is a great city to have what was essentially a local cooking show. I remember him using a Turkish coffee grinder for his pepper mill.

weird: he handles the raw chicken, never washes his hands, touches everything after, and settles the cooked chicken on the same cutting board the raw chicken was on.

Nowadays, you'll never see a tv chef not wash his/her hands after handling stuff.

Yes, in the other clip I watched last night he misspoke and called it a coffee mill, then corrected himself, saying it was a Turkish coffee grinder that he used as a pepper mill.

I remember when his show was taken off the air under scandalous circumstances.

He was best as the galloping gourmet. Religion and health-consciousness took the wind out of the fun he used to have on tv.

Most of the technique I have in the kitchen, I picked up from watching his show and using his cook books. His recipe for basic tomato sauce is still one of the best I've ever made.

The Galloping Gourmet was an entirely different person and program, although they both had a religious tie-in. Graham Kerr came back as a pentecostal Galloping Gourmet in the shows second incarnation and Jeff Smith was a Presbyterian minister before becoming the Frugal Gourmet and did end his career in a scandal involving young men.

The only thing that annoyed me about him was how he was always derisive of how and what Americans ate. He acted like a twenty-something year old who has gone to Europe or Asia for the summer and comes back thinking they are all enlightened.

I know. Now 25 years later this is a substantial portion of the entire electorate. In fact, Mario Batali just published Molto Gusto on this topic.

the frug was the forerunner of the whole food network trend: mediocre food done sloppily but in an entertaining "hey, anybody can do this" manner. plus, despite his whole on-screen persona, the guy treated people around him like sh*t. graham kerr at least could cook, and he is a pretty nice guy.
