Starchy Food Cravings

Potatoes, Rice Pudding, Tapioca, Corn soup. I could jump into a swimming pool of rice pudding and eat my way out (yes, I'd video it for Youtube). I've found myself craving all of the bad stuff - never during the day, always at dinnertime. I've worked hard to keep up my reasonably thin physique, but this is starting to affect me. A typical dinner meal for me is a piece of Salmon and some Asparagus or other vegetable. Or I'll have Lentil stew with carrots. Lately it's been baked potato and butter time for din din - slice them in half and nuke it for 10 minutes. Mmmm. I have been drinking some diet sodas lately and have read about a possible connection to starch cravings. Time to cut that out. I've been here long enough to know what the responses are going to be, but any suggestions?

Are you low-carbing right now? If so, allow yourself one small cheat each week. Have that spaghetti on Sunday night or whatever. Willpower is one thing but there is truth in eating instinctively as well.

If you are not on any particular diet plan, then eat your starchy carbs, just keep it in balance.

There's some theories out there that the aspartame in diet soda messes up your brain by making it think it's getting carbohydrates due to the sweet flavor it provides. Your brain compensates by craving carbs and increases your appetite.

Kick out diet soda and you're likely to see an improvement.

"Likely" due to "some theories" lends too much credence to one study... but it doesn't hurt to try.

Right, of course. But there are quite a few studies out there that link diet sodas to weight gains. Not to mention the non-caloric offenders in diet soda(bone density issues, etc.)

I'm off diet soda for almost 4 years. I love carbs, but I am on a pretty low carb diet. maybe rice a couple of times a month, almost no potatos ever.

Well, Food cravings can affect even the most determined dieter and can mean different things to different people. For example you can have the "harmless" cravings for things like chocolate to chips and starchy foods like French fries to on the harmful side, non-food substances like clay, laundry starch or other items.
