ITT: Describe your near death experiences - Page 8

Biking in the bike lane northbound on a main street (not separated, but marked for bikes). Went through a green light (maybe 10mph, not super-fast) and an SUV turned left from the southbound lane right in front of me. By the time I realized it was happening, I couldn't stop or brake. It was dark out, I had my light on, but he must not've seen me or just thought he could make it. I hit the side of his car head-on. Broke my front teeth and bruised my torso pretty badly, but no other damage. Thinking back, I'm amazed that I could've hit the car at such an angle "” no broken nose, jaw, etc., just the teeth. If I hadn't been wearing a helmet, I'm not sure I would've walked away.

I changed mine this christmas, so I'm good for this year, and then I guess it's time to change again.

And bigbris; it's almost a miracle that you're still alive! Looks like you've been through more than enough, how are you coping with it? Is this something that you think of every day or is it mostly forgotten?

Looked down and the booth was just ... gone. There was mangled yellow cab on the spot. Found out later that somone had been in the booth on the phone when the cab hit. Died instantly.

You would think with the throngs of kids crossing there every day to go to school they would have gated that tunnel off much better, sooner. Also, the down-side to having a high-end brolly.

Those were the close-range experiences. Funny thing is death seemed to get closer and closer each time. 911 was the lifestyle changer, tho.

Some dude got shot 4 feet away from me on Halloween just walking his date home (I ran in and called 911, he didn't make it). 4. Some dude got his throat sliced open 10 feet from me. Stupidly I rushed over to help while they were carving him. The assailants fled.5. Narrowly escaped a 50mph head-on collision because I was trying to eat dumplings while driving to a meeting. My clutch foot didn't stop shaking for like an hour afterward.6. Was standing on the narrow island (now gated) on 33rd & Park waiting to cross to go to school when the old man to my right got sucked in by a passing car & killed. (It wasn't me because I forgot my umbrella that day). The force sucked him out of his shoes.7. Was riding down 5th Ave between 40th & 34th on a fixed-gear bike (was a messenger) when my chain popped. I was in between two buses and couldn't stop. I held each bus with either hand until they stopped at 34th. Needless to say the leg shaking was phenomenal.8. Was riding on West 11th when I noticed a leaf stuck to my front tire. Looking down I tried to grab it each time it went round and crashed headlong into a van. Busted up my leg bad & it took 8 stitches to close up my brow at St. Vincents.

wow. your life is cray.

Bris, respect. 9/11 unfortunately trumps all in this thread, probably.

I flipped a car over a cliff once, rolled it more time than I could count and landed on my head. Then I wrapped a car around a tree the next week.
Also got one of those kinds of doctors who says the wrong things too early, and wrongly told me I had some sort of brain tumor that incurred a highly risky procedure - and that MRI's take so long to develop, so I rode that out for like a month, not knowing. That was a very slow and painful experience, not so near death, but it felt like it.
