Driving to Manhattan and Don't Want to Pay to Park

I am planning a trip to New York with some friends from July 5th to July 7th. Parking at our hotel is $65 per day.

I was thinking about driving to New Jersey and taking the Path Train or New Jersey Transit Bus into the city. Is there safe and cheap parking near Newark Penn Station or Metropark? Or is there safe and cheap parking somewhere along a bus line?

Any other suggestions that I haven't thought of yet would also be greatly appreciated.

Too bad the dates don't work - if it was 4/3 to 4/5, I would have taken the car for the week end and even paid you for it. WIN/WIN

Amtrak stations have decent lots. I don't know how many of them are free any more but they are certainly way cheaper than manhattan.

No chance of free parking. Hoboken is the nearest NJ path station... just a couple stops before Penn station (NY). Nothing wrong with parking in Hoboken, but it won't be free. To give you an idea, my apartment building in Manhattan now charges $100/month for a space to park your bicycle in their garage. f-d up.

A friend of mine from Rutgers just suggested parking in the garage at Metropark.

I called them and they said it would be $9/day (They confirmed I can leave it overnight for two days). Path train fare is $1.50/person. I figure I can get round trip with three people for $22.50.

Does anyone know if it is safe to leave your car at Metropark? If so, I think that might be the plan.

1) Drive to the north Bronx (by the last stop of the 1 train) 2) Goto one of the side streets and find a spot 3) ??? 4) Ticket. No but really, there is parking all over the city.

You can park for, free in the Ironbound of Newark without, much worry and a walk of, 5-10 mins to the Path.

I drive into Manhattan all the time and almost always park for free. Best neighborhoods I've found are the West Village, West Soho/Tribeca and East Village, but even Soho ain't too bad. Just keep an eye out for the parking limits (listed on signs). At worst, you'll have to periodically move your car.

Assuming your hotel is Midtown, you can take a cab or subway up. Easy-peasy.

I agree. The summers are quite good for street parking, particularly on the weekends.

I was able to get a hotel rate that included a discounted parking rate for the 6 days I'm in NYC for the Fourth.
