Finally!!! A design that I like with the Russian calf

Bengal-stripe: I thought only one dive was made back in 1973...and the diver himself noted he will never go back since the waters were so dangerous. Am surprised to hear more successful dives were made

Christian,

I think those shoes look nice. My G&G MTO also arrived, they are also Norwegians too.

Really beautiful shoes. Congrats. Only thing I might change is the split-toe, but it seems that's part of the design.

How does Russian calf hold up? Is it more like an exotic (lizard, gator, croc), is it comparable to calf, or is it tough like cordovan?

Or my personal favorite, Russian unicorn-skin:

Exclusive to Lobb Paris, as only two unicorns have ever been slain (both in the Causus Mountains of Elbrus, Russia) and their skin is kept in the back for use in shoes solely for Arab dictators and Russian oligarchs. But I scored a pair off eBay. Shweet.

On a related note, you will also see the term "Russian calf" in the catalogues and advertisements of that time. Today, we think of Russian calf as the cross-hatched embossed reindeer hides that were salvaged from the Metta Catharina, but that was not the case back then. The term Russian calf simply meant leather tanned in the traditional Russian way of being soaked in pits of willow bark and curried with birch oil. Just as that term has evolved, so too -- I believe -- has the term "willow" calf.

I would buy it because I like it, not because of what it is called nor the history. There have been so, so many products made out of this stuff by so many different vendors, that I find the claims to it's authenticity dubious at this point. But keep in mind that I have not gone scuba diving to the wreck.
