Similar to SugarCane 1947?

My SugarCane 1947 is about to blow out in the crotch area and I need a replacement. I haven't kept up with the denim world since I got these several years ago so I'm not familiar with many of the new brands and models. I'm looking for something similar in fit to the 1947. I need size 31. Under $300, but would be interested in cheaper pricepoints if they're good values. Thanks.

Why not just get another pair of the sugar canes? There is a guy that sells them on ebay pretty regularly for around $150 a pair.

If you want something similar but a hair more fitted with a cool new type of denim try out the Sugar Cane 2009 (aka Type II '47): http://www.selfedge.com/shop/index.p...roducts_id=476

Well, I've always like the LVC, the denim made in the place it was made 63 years ago... and here, just cos I have a photo on the hard drive, is an original:

Dang, Paul. How similar is the denim on the originals, compared to the LVC? Are the originals in your size?

Ah, poor use of Enlgish I'm afriad, should have said it's the photos I happen to have, sitting on my hard drive. I've owned a 50s pair but never a 40s pair I'm afraid.

I've handled the originals and they vary widely; so do the repros, there's wide sample variation in the fabric because the looms are so inconsistent. Some of them very close indeed, altho my favourite LVC fabric is perhaps the 1955.

Gotcha. Your 47 LVCs look great. I've washed mine frequently; they don't look nearly so impressive, but they are still among my favorite jeans. I love the way the arcuates come undone in places. Kent - you can try on LVCs at By George, by the way. They have a pretty good denim selection right now. Also have KMW, Tellason and Jean Shop.

SC47s seem more like LVC 55s than 47s, IMO.

The original shape is open to question. It's possible that LVC undersized their 47 repro to reflect the fact that it was being worn undersized by bikers etc, and most of the photos I've seen form that era do seem to have a pretty small leg opening. But a benefit of the LVC range is that the 47 and 55 are pretty different in feel, with the 47 being a pretty classic, as in versatile, cut. You can size down a clear two inches on the 55 in comparison, and it's still bulkier. THis is a 34W 1947 (actual size 33W) on the left and a 32W 1955, on the right. Note how the 47 fabric is grainier, and in the flesh slightly greyer, than the 55.

This is the leading option for me right now. That's a pretty good price and I'm happy going with a pair that I've worn before. Actually I'm a little disappointed in how quickly the Sugar Canes wore out. I think I had about the equivalent of 1.5 years of everyday wear. Are some of the other options known to be more durable?

Blue Owl, the SF affiliate up top, has a 30% off sale on denim with free shipping in the states. So you can buy a pair of 31 SC 47's for about $170 shipped (probably cheaper than the ebay guy after shipping).

They've also got the Okinawa in your size. You could try that.

You're dissapointed in paying $150 and getting 500 days of wear out of pant? You could look at the iron heart 634s if you want soul crushing thick denim that breaths still somewhat. The samauri s0500xx i have is slightly slimmer than the 1966 sugar canes I have and feels like they'd last longer. Taking forever to soften up though and a smidge hot.
