Banning?
I was thinking about it, but then you just make him even harder to reach, and as a matter of policy, we never intervene in buyer/seller disputes (which is basically what this is, although a pretty extreme case of it) so not really doing anyone any favors to ban the guy...more than happy to be overruled though.

Let me help you guys out. This is a crime. In my state (NC) it is a felony. I would be shocked if it was not a felony in all states. You guys are acting as though this is some objectionable prank. Let me be clear, this is no different than stealing directly from a person's pocket. People go to pound-me-in-the-ass prison for this type of action. I can not comprehend why you are not treating it as such.

Each of you should do the following: 1. make an effort to verify the address; 2. contact your local police department's fraud investigations unit; 3. contact his local fraud investigations unit; and 4. contact the FBI - I add the last because this is interstate fraude involving multiple states and appears to be a systematic and persistent fraud scheme.

I bought a macbook pro from the guy and did receive it, but the purchase did not generate so much goodwill that I can condone thievery.

On such big purchases, pay with credit card and PAY the paypal fee for the sellers. Above $250, paypal requires signature confirmation and that give you some protection over what you get from your cc. Honestly 3% is not too much considering I used to pay 5% for COD services. Most people get 1% cashback/point/reward so it ends up being only 2%. I get 2% back on every cc purchase and maybe some people get even more (let me know in that case).

And yes, jrobjr is right, this is a serious crime. Mail fraud is a federal felony, I believe.

What card gives you 2% on every purchase, may I ask?

Believe me, I learned my lesson from this one. It doesn't matter to me now how long a history you've had at any given forum, I'll pay the 3% and use a credit card. Jason Fama aka Itsmedeka had a 3 year history at the forum we got scammed at. The problem is, there is no negative buyer feedback to look up, except for random posts. The guys who got victimized, including myself, all paid using paypal gift. You all know how that goes.

so has anyone tracked him down or reported him to the authorities yet?

We know where he lives. A friend of mine living in SoCal paid him a visit and kindly asked him to refund my money. My friend then called me up and I spoke to Jason Fama on the phone, asked him nicely to just refund my money and all we be forgotten, but then he insisted that he already shipped the camera to my home address and lived up to his part of the deal. At that point I lost it and the military in me came out. I probably cussed him out nonstop for minutes, in the end I realized this guy had no plans of returning my money or any of ours for that matter.
He's already been reported on the IC3 (Internet crime) website. Next week, police reports and small claims. Bottomline is, after daily attempts to reach him, we gave him enough time to right the ship. He chooses to keep the money and be known as someone thieving on other people's hard earned money.

Any updates?

I got a hold of his cell number and bombarded him with messages. After so many messages, he replied back and said he would ship me the camera. The next text I get, he says to be patient as he has now moved to the Philippines and is getting settled down, but the camera would come soon. Typical scammer rhetoric. I need to just sue this guy, but I may have to drive down to LA and file suit there which sucks. Time is a luxury for me.

The problem is that even if you win in court, you still need to collect. It's not impossible but not easy either.
