Tupac in a runaway for sheer influence. BIG made great rap accessible with pop sensibilities. This is too hard to call. I accidentally voted for Rakim, but Rakim is in my top 5 anyhow.

I'd put Biggie, Tupac, Rakim, KRS1 in top 4.

Top 10: Jay Z, Nas, Kool G, Ice Cube, Chuck D, Big Daddy Kane.

Honorable mention: Common, if you look at an anthology of all of his works, it isn't all that great, but he had a few real standout, knockout tracks... I Used to Love H.E.R, The Light, etc...

I don't see Hov. Therefore, this thread is void.

Edit: But seriously though, Shawn Corey Carter by a light-year.

Based not necessarily upon the content of the lyrics, but the way they are sung and with what tone, I would say Datyton Family is pretty good, especially whichever member sings FBI, what's on my mind, and do you remember.

edit: oh, and I'm really not a fan of rap/hip-hop, but for some strange reason I just like DF.

I'd vote for Jay-z. Longevity, versatility, sick flows and an all around badass rapper.

Also, I don't think Slick Rick is good enough to be in the poll twice.

Lauryn Hill - seriously, when the woman wanted to rap, she had it all. Too bad she didn't want to for very long.

Of the poll options:
Andre 3000 - same boat

Biggie - great, amazing songs - but when they're placed in other contexts (****** remix mixtapes like the XX/BIG thing, or acapellas), you realize how much he needed that Bad Boy production style

Nas - for Illmatic and a few songs here and there, maybe the best pure rapper. ****** taste in beats have held him back for a decade.

Mos Def shouldn't even be on the list.

Torn between Nas and Slick Rick.

Wasn't just the ****** beats. He lost the hunger/intensity/grittiness that he had on Illmatic after he got famous. This is typical for rappers - see Wu Tang.
