What is your error rate?

Over the past year I've replaced all of my clothes. I lost a significant amount of weight and transitioned from an office where jeans and t-shirts were acceptable to an office where they are not. I began to care how I dressed (and found SF).

I've spent a frightening sum of money. I've learned a lot, but along the way I've made plenty of mistakes. Mostly in the way of buying clothes that don't fit well (too big). So already some of what I've bought I don't wear, and need to replace all over again.

How often do you make purchases which you later regret? What is an acceptable error rate? What do you with the stuff you buy and don't wear?

Re-sell it or use amex return protection

Very rarely, but I don't purchase many things and would certainly dress better if I was willing to make more mistakes. Symptom of living in a small town and not being able to "eat" bad internet purchases if they're made.

This is typical so don't sweat it. In the beginning everyone who starts paying attention to fashion/personal style is going to screw it up big time. I don't want to think about some of the abominations I put together in high school -- my error rate was probably 25-33%. But that's part of the learning process. By learning what doesn't work, you eventually figure out what does. My current error rate is probably ~5% now that I know what I can pull off. But occasional mistakes can -- and should -- happen. If you're not making errors once in a while, it means you've stopped pushing yourself.

Let me see Right now I would say about 60% of my clothes are wearable... that will go up to about 80-85% when I tailor my tentesque dress shirts That's just wearable though; I haven't had any real knockout purchases in a long time. Right now I'm just focusing on getting + making my clothes fit, and then honing things in later on.

Considering 90% of my clothes are ordered used from Japan, I'm gonna say "too fucking high"

A few years back I spent way to much at JCrew, I've given most of those clothes away to friends at this point... I'll still get something there every once in a while, but not very often.

Way too fucking high. I don't wear 60% of the shit in my closet, and they're all recent purchases too. I need to start being a little more selective of what I buy and holding onto my receipts.

My error rate is about 25%.

It varies with price. At thrift stores where stuff is 5$ and I get excited to see something that I almost might wear it's about 80%, while I can't think of any 100$+ things I've bought and regretted.

15% on style/fit and 20% on sizing (only a serious issue when buying used on Ebay or B&S)

I'd guess 5% last 6 month, and 10% for last year with online purchases. I certainly have gotten much, much better at it.

on high priced stuff, pretty low (i'll try something on like 15 times to make sure its right if i'm buying in person, or i'll obsess over measurements for a while if its online), but on lower priced stuff, like 50 and under, i've bought shirts and pants from b&s and from stores that i haven't worn much. i've got a couple pairs of trousers in my closet that I haven't worn because they are too baggy with too high of a rise, and some shirts i've never worn because they're too baggy (but probably nothing some alterations couldn't fix as soon as i find a tailor)

I'm going to drive myself crazy trying to find a suit though, all i have now is some mens wearhouse monstrosity i bought during my junior year of university, and its about one size big in all directions and has like a 2 inch drop.

Pretty low I guess. There are some items (maybe 20%) I wear very, very rarely, and even a few items I've never ever worn before (maybe 5 - 10%), but most of that is stuff I really do like, but a lot of the times it's something I can't incorporate quite yet. For example, maybe I don't have shoes I feel match a pair of pants properly, the pants go on hold until I get some. At the end of the day though, I absolutely love like 95% of my wardrobe, worn or not.

I'm usually off on sizing around 5% or less of the time. Usually through sufu/sz/sf or the sellers measurements/model description I can figure sizing out for any brand.

close to 30%
