I have always considered American Pie to be the best song of all time and it is not even on this list.

Last time I saw a top songs of 1900-2000 list, The Streets Have No Name was #1 and One was in the top 10... interesting to see their position in this list. Boys of Summer at 416... wow.

My personal list puts Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower at #1...looks like it made #48 on RS.
I personally think Nirvana at #9 is off the mark, too high.

well yeah, of course the top two spots are direct tie-ins to the magazine.

that's the whole raison d'etre for the list. there's the top 2, and all the rest are filler to make you think they've given it an honest effort.

IIRC this was voted on by the editors, readers, recording artists, and studio execs. This list is totally FUBARed because of this dichotomy between music geeks, average top 40 joes, and people with ulterior motives. That being said, I think that they are relatively close to having one of the most comprehensive lists out there.

QFE. The very idea of any kind of objective top 500 list is totally flawed, but that said, I think the RS one is about as good as it would get.

i'd put all along the watchtower at 1, with Simon & Garfunkel's Sound of Silence somewhere up there too. Metallica's Master of Puppets in top 10, probably Queen's Bohemian rhapsody and Led Zepp's Stairway to Heaven or Kashmir

There's a lot of the rolling stones on this list...

i would have thought some MJ songs would be higher.
